I have spent hours on Pinterest looking for lists that will help me with motherhood, help my baby sleep & help me keep my sanity. I have found that overall these lists don't fully apply to me - but I always got some good ideas and I took away some great tips. So to all the Mommas out there here are my top ten for the first bit of mommy hood aka the first four months.
1. Jolly Jumper Breastfeeding Pillow
I obviously didn't do enough arm exercises pre-baby as I found breastfeeding for hours a day rather hard on the arms and my lazy arms impacted my latch. My hubby came home one day with this bad boy and it saved my life (and my arms). It also makes it easy for others to feed Finnley and make him comfortable and familiar.
In the first six weeks you are up all the time feeding, and should you have a barfy baby like me you have to keep baby upright for twenty to thirty minutes post-feed. That makes for long nights. I've watched a ton of Netflix. Mostly I watch stuff I've seen before that I don't mind missing if I'm distracted. Subtitles also help for when your petrified of waking up your little bean.
3. Medicine Syringe
So - FTM (first time mom) didn't know the importance of these and sent my husband out in the middle of the night to get one while baby was losing his mind. Make it easy on yourself. Get one pre-baby.
4. Fisher Price Little Lamb Swing
This is a lifesaver! I got this as a shower gift and we use it all the time! When Finnley was little he would nap in it, now that he's older we use it as part of our activity rotation or to help calm him down.
5. Costco Size Box of K-cups (we get Tim Hortons)
So one of life's cruel tricks is that when you're exhausted as a mommy you can only drink so much coffee otherwise you will pass the caffeine to your baby through breast milk. I know. WHAT THE HELL? NO FAIR! That being said some days you just need it. I never want to find out in a moment of desperation that I'm out so a near-endless supply courtesy of Costco is the key to coffee success.
6. Aden & Anais White Noise Machine -Serenity Star
We were gifted a sleep sheep which I love for naps and while I'm out, but the timer only last forty five minutes and I'd like my baby to sleep for longer than that. I'd sneak in and turn it off and on but that's a pain. This machine stays on forever and drowns out most household noises. Keep it by the crib or near the door to help block out the most noise. I like this model as it tells me the room temperature and also acts as a night light.
7. A Good Camera
My lovely hubby got me a DSLR for my birthday before the baby was born and it has been AMAZING. I love taking photos and the quality is fantastic. I definitely need to learn more about how to use it but I'm excited to try/learn. I also like to do photo books and in excited to have high quality photos of my little guy for my Mixbooks.
8. A Freezer Full of Meals
In the first six weeks I was killing it with cooking and what not. But then again, my baby slept ALL THE TIME. Now, Finnley hates sleep, naps are all over the place and tends to ignore the idea that sleep begets sleep. So I started batch cooking and almost every Sunday, while my hubby is around to help, I make seven to ten meals to freeze. That way, all I'm responsible for is popping a pre-made meal in the oven. I like that our meals are easy and healthy and that we know exactly what's in them.
9. A Group of Mommy Friends
I started going to a mommy group when Finnley was six weeks. It was so scary - like a massive blind date, but I'm so glad I went. It's great to talk to other moms and get ideas - and sometimes you need to feel like there's a reason to put on clean clothes, a bra and deodorant. This group introduced me to some new friends as well who offer me support, guidance & wine.
10. A Babysitter You Trust
Okay, so I cheat here. For me, this is my mom. But it is so important to have help you trust. So you can nap, or bathe, or have just have a bit of a break in any given day. Most importantly, because they can watch your bean while you and your hubby go out. We recently went out for dinner and a NHL hockey game for our first solo date since bean was born and I feel like a new woman, or technically the old me. Having support is so important. It's probably why they say it takes a village.
So - to the moms with older kids what did you find most important to get you through the first months, or year, with your own little bundle of joy?

He is now four months old. On the one hand I can’t believe how little he is still and on the other I feel like he is growing way to fast and I’m trying really hard to remember all these little things.

I'm writing this post at 3:36 am because I'm up so why not take advantage of the time. We have been struggling hardcore with sleep, as in not getting any. Do yesterday I was feeling human and wanted to do something that I enjoyed, which for me often tends to be baking.
I opted to whip up these chewy oatmeal cookies for a mommy play date I was going on. I wanted something spicy, sweet and tart. Plus I had all the ingredients - a rare find for me.
These cookies are AMAZING. They stay soft and chewy and aren't too sweet. They are both mom and hubby approved.

**How to Rehydrate Crasins** Before you start your mixing boil a kettle. Make yourself some tea, with the leftover hot water cover the crasins. Just before you add them to the cookies drain them and give a quick rinse with cool water.
Tips For Extra Chewy Cookies
