I love the look of mercury glass. Our house is a mix of country and industrial (odd mix, but we like it). Mercury glass seems to fit my country vibe and my husband's modern style.
In addition to mercury glass I love Pinterest and a good craft, so I got it in my head that I HAD to make mercury glass. Only challenge was every post I read talked about a Glass or Looking Glass apart paint that is not sold in Canada.
So I had to improvise (read my post on blanket ladders to see when improvising doesn't always work). I got a gold and silver spray paint and opted to layer them.
How I Did It
Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water (must have a mist feature)
Clean glass containers of various sizes and let dry (I used dollar store ones - but get lots takes a few attempts to get it right)
In a protected, well ventilated area, prep your work area for spray painting (I used a box helped to keep things contained)
Lightly mist the inside of a glass container with the water mix, the water should bead up on the glass
Working quickly spray paint the inside of the glass using quick sprays that are a fair distance away. TIP: You will repeat the process over and over again so use light layers
Quickly mist the inside of the glass again with the vinegar mixture
Let the paint set for a minute and then using a paper towel wipe away the excess paint (it will lift off where the water mixture was sprayed).
Keep repeating the same process to get your desired effect. I liked the gold, silver, gold approach myself
TIP: Be careful of your nails when using the paper towel, I got a cup streaks vs beautiful spots because I got aggressive
Good luck - would love to hear how your project works out!
